Thoughts for those experiencing torrential rain and flooding

Media release date: 25/01/2012 12:00 AM

Australian Unity extends its thoughts and best wishes to the people of Brisbane, southeast Queensland and Northern NSW as they experience disruption and uncertainty due to torrential rain and flooding.

We are reminded of the awful floods of last year and the unpredictability of nature and the disruption it can cause. We are also reminded of the community spirit and resilience that Australians so often demonstrate in situations such as this.

Australian Unity, in collaboration with the Queensland Government, had planned to co-host tomorrow’s AusSounds Australia Day concert and festivities at South Bank in Brisbane.  The festival has been cancelled as a result of the torrential rain.

Australian Unity is investigating the possibility of redirecting our planned support for these Australia Day activities to affected communities in need. In the meantime, we continue to wish every Australian a happy—and safe—Australia Day.
