Entries open for Mt Eymard Art Prize

Media release date: 13/07/2010 12:00 AM

Budding painters have the chance to join the ranks of other celebrated artists and see their masterpieces hung on gallery walls as part of the 2010 Mt Eymard Art Prize.

The art prize now in its second year, is a free open-themed painting competition for New South Wales residents aged 55 and over. Works in any medium such as collages and those utilising mixed media are welcome except photography, sculpture and craft.

Australian Unity’s Client Services Manager at Mt Eymard Retirement Village Neville Jenkins said the exhibition aims to highlight different styles, media and approaches to painting.

“I was inspired to organise the competition when I saw the pleasure that residents receive from painting,” Mr Jenkins said.

“I could see a lifetime of skill and talent in their works and this competition provides an opportunity for our residents and other over 55s from the community to display their artwork to the general public.”

He said the works of art will be judged in each age bracket by Goulburn Artist and businessman Bob Millis with entries in each section to form part of a free exhibition held at Bowral District Art Society Gallery.

Mr Millis said he encourages all people over 55s who enjoy painting to enter the competition.

The winners will be announced at the official opening on Friday 6 August at 3.00pm, with the exception of the People’s Choice Award which will be announced at the conclusion of the exhibition at 4.00pm on Sunday 8 August 2010.  You can view the free exhibition at the Bowral District Art Society Gallery, 1 Short Street, Bowral on 7 and 8 August 2010 from 10.00 am to 4.00 pm daily.
